How did you get started in the world of bodybuilding?
I didn’t even know the meaning of the sport bodybuilding until I was around 17. It was during a summer break that my older brother decided to take me to a local gym since I was really bored at home. As I spent more and more time at the gym I started seeing some small changes in my body; nothing too drastic but it seemed to be quite enough for the people around me to notice me more. As time went by I started doing my own research, going online and reading more and more about it until seriously I got hooked up on the sport and now it’s my lifestyle. I entered my first competition at the age of 19 and placed 3rd in a teen division.
What Training Routine Do You Use To Get That Quality Physique?
That’s a very important way to phrase this question, QUALITY physique. I see many people these days simply trying to put on weight with poor nutrition and thinking by lifting heavy they will get proportionate and big. My routine consists of hitting every single major muscle first and then smaller muscles as training goes by. For me it’s about hitting every muscle from every single angle possible in order to develop a full proportional physique that will serve not only as a physique I can use on stage for competition but as well transferable to anything else I might want. My routine consists usually of a 5 day body split and it only changes when I feel i have hit a plateau. Otherwise why change something that’s working?…
What’s your diet like?
My current diet is a bit complex, I am currently getting ready for a show in early April and I am doing a diet consisting of High Carb Day, Medium Carb Day, two low carb days and one high fat intake day. This type of nutritional plan was given to me by my coach Rick Sosias. Protein is always kept really high in order to preserve high quality muscle that I have put on during my off season. I use Optimum Nutrition BCAA and Optimum Nutrition Glutamine mainly to keep on muscle during my cutting cycle. I also use Optimum Nutrition fish oil and CLA in order to have a healthy cardiovascular system and use my fats as energy source. I ALWAYS keep these essential supplements with me no matter whether I am dieting or off season:
- Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard-Cake batter is my favourite
- Optimum Nutrition Glutamine
- Opti-Men
- Optimum Nutrition Fish Oil
- Optimum Nutrition CLA
What’s your motivation?
My ultimate goal is to make it to nationals one day. It’s going to take quite a bit of time, but with my coach Rick Sosias and the staff people at Inner Strength Gym in Denver (http://www.goisf.com/) I know my goals will become more attainable.
If you could give once piece of advice about bodybuilding/fitness what would it be?
Dedication is the key. If you cannot stick with eating correctly and training then it’s all pointless. You need to keep yourself dedicated at what you do at all times in order to separate yourself from the crowd. Staying persistent with what you want and never giving up despite all odds is essential. Bodybuilding is a mind game as well and if you can’t be strong in mind then it’s not the right sport for you. Owner of gym Inner Strength Chris Williamson once told me this “If you don’t have the right mentality to win then why are you training?”. Once he told me that I knew that I had to switch my mentality abut training and wanting to stay strong and win at all costs.
Proudest bodybuilding/fitness accomplishment?
I have been featured in several international article, published as both author and model on some national magazines and I am a prod Athlete of American Bodybuilding and Optimum Nutrition. My proudest accomplished would have to be keeping up with this lifestyle that is complicated but rewarding. I have finally for the first time in my life obtained help from experts such as Rick Sosias, Jake Purdy (http://www.jakepurdyfitness.com/) and Chris Williamson who are going to make me even more proud of the lifestyle I chose as they help me and improve my will power. I have many accomplishments still to achieve but if it wasn’t for the bodybuilder lifestyle I wouldn’t have accomplished an eight of what my life is today.
Any plans for the future?
As I previously mentioned I am currently dieting for the Northern Championships here in CO, towards the end of the year I plan in competing in the Rocky’s as well here in CO. From there I will simply keep training hard and seeing where it takes me. My ultimate goal has always been to become an IFBB Pro and compete at that level. It’s a long far dream but I know with the motivation I’m getting lately from people and my wife Katherine I can do it.
Favourite Cheat Meal?
By far my favourite cheat meal would be pizza or sushi.
Favourite Exercise?
I enjoy training my calves and triceps more than anything to be honest. My two personal favourites would be seated calf raises and triceps close grip bench press.
Favourite Bodybuilder?
I think Eduardo Correa (from Brazil) has a great physique at the Pro level. In addition I have always admired the look of Ronnie Rockel.
Favourite Quote?
“A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.” (Walter Gagehot)
“There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won’t anymore and who always will. So don’t worry about people from your past, there’s a reason why they didn’t make it to your future!”
